A Cathedral City police officer shot an armed suspect the evening of Monday, March 2, while responding to a report of an intruder at a home, police said Tuesday.
At 7:08 p.m., the Cathedral City Police Department received a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon at Via Minorca in the Date Palm Country Club, according to a police news release.
Police said the caller reported someone they knew had forced their way into the residence and stabbed one of the occupants.
When officers arrived, they contacted the suspect, described as a 55-year-old man, outside the residence. The suspect was still armed with a weapon, the release said.
That’s when the officer fired, the news release says without giving details on how many times he fired. No officers were injured, but two people were taken to the hospital: the suspect who was shot by police and the victim of the stabbing that happened before officers arrived. Police did not release their conditions.
No other information was available Tuesday morning, Commander Jon Enos of the police department said in the release.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigation Detail responded to the scene to conduct a criminal investigation of the shooting. CCPD’s Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether department policies were followed.
The officer who fired was a 13-year veteran of law enforcement. Under standard practice, he will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
