The Canyon Fire in Ventura and Los Angeles counties has exploded to 4,856 acres, prompting evacuation orders as officials battled the blaze in soaring temperatures. It’s just one of multiple fires burning in California, including the largest blaze so far this year, the Gifford Fire.
The Canyon Fire, which ignited in a canyon area southeast of Lake Piru, grew to over 4,856 acres and is 25% contained, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said on Saturday morning, Aug. 9.
The blaze has damaged no residences, and there have not been any reported injuries, officials said.
This blaze, among the latest in a string of wildfires that have ignited recently across the state, comes amid Cal Fire’s forecast of “above-normal large fire activity by July and August.” The fire rapidly spread on Aug. 7, prompting evacuations for 2,700 residents in the region, the Ventura County Fire Department said.

Where is the Canyon Fire in California?
The Canyon Fire is east of Piru in Ventura County and had spread east into Los Angeles County later on Aug. 7, said the Ventura County Fire Department.
Gifford Fire update
The Gifford Fire is at 104,590 acres and has been 21% contained, according to the latest update from the Los Padres National Forest on Aug. 9. Nearly two thousand structures are threatened by the Gifford Fire, which is northeast of Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County, burning in the Los Padres National Forest.
When did the Gifford Fire start?
The Gifford Fire began on Aug. 1 when firefighters responded to reports of multiple wildfires along Highway 166 west of Cuyama, according to an incident report.
Rosa Fire update today
The Rosa Fire ignited near Ribbonwood, south of Palm Desert in Riverside County, on Aug. 4. The 1,690-acre blaze has been 40% contained, according to an Aug. 9 morning update from Cal Fire. No structures have been destroyed or damaged by the fire, officials said in an incident update.
Gold Fire near Big Bear update today
The Gold Fire started on Aug. 4 in the San Bernardino National Forest in the Holcomb Valley area near Big Bear Lake. The fire grew to 1,079 acres and was 15% contained, according to the last update by the San Bernardino National Forest on Aug. 9.
