A two-vehicle collision just outside Ventura on Oct. 6 left one Santa Paula woman dead and another injured, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash near the 11400 block of Foothill Road shortly before 6 a.m., said Sgt. Mike Untalan. The area is just east of the Del Sol Community neighborhood of Ventura.
An initial investigation showed that a Dodge Caravan minivan was driving westbound on Foothill Road while a Nissan Kicks SUV followed several car lengths behind, Untalan said. A man drove the minivan with a female passenger while the SUV was driven by a woman.
The CHP initially reported that the passenger of the Dodge was a man, and the Nissan was a different model, but later reports corrected the information.
The Dodge slowed for a U-turn into the eastbound lane when the Nissan failed to slow down and struck it, authorities said. The SUV ended up in a ditch after the crash.
The driver of the SUV, a 51-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, and her identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin, authorities said. The passenger of the Dodge, a 32-year-old Santa Paula woman, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, while the driver remained on scene.
The CHP’s Ventura-area office is investigating, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash, authorities said.
East and westbound lanes of Foothill Road between Wells and Aliso Canyon roads were shut down briefly during the investigation, the agency posted on social media.
