49ers are reportedly interested in 21-TD WR hitting free agency

The San Francisco 49ers somehow survived all of the injuries and Brandon Aiyuk drama to go 12-5 in the regular season and defeat the defending Super Bowl champions in the wild-card round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champions in the divisional round.

Heading into the offseason, San Francisco expected to move on from Aiyuk, and they also have Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, Skyy Moore and Trent Taylor hitting the market at wide receiver as well.

With that, 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan need to aggressively pursue weapons that Brock Purdy can throw to in the coming weeks and months. According to the MMQB’s Albert Breer, San Francisco has already shown some interest in pending free agents, including Romeo Doubs.

“Brandon Aiyuk is obviously on the way out, and it sure seems like Jauan Jennings is too. The Niners will return former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, and not a ton after that. There’s a developing young guy in Jacob Cowing, and an older vet in Demarcus Robinson. Help is needed, for sure,” Breer wrote.

“Along those lines, I’ve heard they have an interest in both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs on the free-agent market. And failing that, there’s a deep class in the draft, with Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. sticking out as a nice fit for San Francisco.”

Doubs, 25, played collegiately at Nevada from 2018-21, earning All-Mountain West honors twice (2020 and 2021), before the Green Bay Packers took him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Over the last four years, Doubs has appeared in 59 games and has started 50 while catching 202 passes for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Spotrac projects that Doubs will receive a four-year, $48 million deal this offseason, which is certainly doable for the 49ers, but he’s not a true No. 1 receiver. He’ll probably be on par with Pearsall, if the second-year wideout can stay healthy.

If San Francisco is willing to bring in more with Doubs, that could be great, but if he’s the top addition at the position for 2026, fans will probably be disappointed.
