BAY CITY – The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Great Lakes Bay Region has announced its nominee for this year’s national “Youth of the Year” competition.
The organization’s leadership team selected Zaid Jackson, 16, for the honor, citing her character, commitment, and innumerable acts of selfless service. As the Great Lakes Bay Region’s Youth of the Year, Jackson will join other nominees from across Michigan in Lansing on April 17 to share her story and compete for the state title.
“I am so honored to represent the Bay Region in this competition,” Jackson, a Bay City resident, said. “The Club has helped me improve in many different areas, such as public speaking, critical thinking, listening, and learning. The Club has also taught me patience and helped me through some of my toughest times.”
Jackson grew up in the Clubs and distinguished herself by accepting a leadership role within the organization as a “youth development professional.” According to COO Jennifer Freeland, Jackson invests countless hours crafting innovative program opportunities for youths at the Bay City site, frequently overseeing the Project Learn and Power Hour initiatives.
“Zaid is an outstanding candidate for Youth of the Year,” Freeland said. “She excels in the classroom while demonstrating outstanding character on a daily basis. Zaid is a true role model for our members.”
Longtime friend Jordyn Villano, the Clubs’ social-emotional learning coordinator, first met Jackson as a youth in the program. Villano described Jackson as a natural leader who always wanted to help, even as a child.
“I was so excited and proud when I heard she was selected,” Villano said. “I definitely think it’s well deserved. Her kind heart is her strongest trait. She loves and cares for everyone. I know she will be amazing in Lansing.”
If named the Michigan Youth of the Year, Jackson will advance again within the competition. Six teens will ultimately be considered during the National Youth of the Year Celebration, culminating with one youth will be named national teen spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
