St. Clair Landscaping and Irrigation, formerly St. Clair Nursery, turns 100

“In this little town of St. Clair, it’s lasted a hundred years,” said owner Matt McCartney, addressing the St. Clair City Council on June 17.

That makes St. Clair Landscaping and Irrigation, formerly St. Clair Nursery, the same age as the town’s neighbor to the north, the city of Marysville.

“That’s quite an honor,” said McCartney.

McCartney spoke after Mayor Bill Cedar read proclamation acknowledging the company’s 100th anniversary and presenting the firm with a certificate of appreciation at the city council’s regular meeting June 17.

“In 1924, the Snodgrass family established a business dedicated to horticulture and natural beautification and thus St. Clair Nursery began,” said Cedar, as heard on the recording of the meeting posted on YouTube. “In 1966, the McCartney family became the second and only other family in this business for the next six decades. Within the time since the inception of the nursery, the services have evolved to include landscaping and irrigation… St. Clair Landscape and Irrigation has been a prominent, locally owned business for 100 years and has shared dedicated knowledge and expertise with hundreds of families and homes. They have made significant contributions to our quality of life and we are honored to offer recognition and support.”

The audience applauded owners Dan and Matt McCartney.

“Thank you to the city,” said Matt. “This is unexpected.”

“Thank you everybody for your support,” said Dan.

Two days earlier, the company held a party for the community in the courtyard of Riverview Plaza, which it landscaped. The event featured free hotdogs from St. Clair Coney, slushees, face painting, a bounce house and live music.

“The weather was perfect and the music was rockin!” posted the firm on Facebook. “Fun was had by all! Thank you to the St. Clair Michigan Chamber of Commerce for all your help and support!”

“Congratulations on this milestone,” said the chamber in response. “We are honored to have you as a member of not only the Chamber but our community.”
