Are you curious about what kinds of plants grow underwater? Have you heard about the North Channel County Park but aren’t sure exactly where it is? Join us for an evening of fun and fascination during a free aquatic plant identification workshop at our newest park!
Erica Clites, Extension Educator with Michigan Sea Grant, will describe how to find and identify aquatic plants as well as their habitats and ecology. Staff from St. Clair County Parks and the Lake St. Clair Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) will assist. This event will take place Monday, July 29, Wednesday, July 10, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the new North Channel County Park, located at 2431 Pointe Tremble, Clay Twp. next to the DNR boat launch. Limited parking is available and there are no restrooms. Participants are encouraged to bring their own waders and lawn chairs, and there will be plenty to learn about on shore without going into the water. This program will be limited to the first 25 people to sign up and pre-registration is required by Friday, July 26. To register, contact Kirsten Lyons at klyons@stclaircounty.org or (810) 989-6317.
Aquatic plants support fish, microbes, and insects and provide shade and produce oxygen. Our instructor, Erica Clites, said, “Freshwater ecosystems such as those found along the North Channel and in adjacent wetlands host many wildlife species, and I look forward to exploring these underwater forests with workshop participants.” Watch the St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission Facebook page for updated information about this event and in case of severe weather. This event qualifies for one and a half MSU Extension Master Gardener education hours.
