Port Huron city clerk wins election integrity award

By Jim Bloch

Port Huron City Clerk Cyndee Jonseck has been recognized with the Sunlight Award by the Michigan Fair Election Institute for her efforts to insure safe and fair elections in the city.

The Sunlight Award is named in honor of U.S. Supreme Court Judge Louis M. Brandeis’s insight that “sunlight is the best of disinfectants” when it comes guaranteeing openness and accountability in government.

Brandeis served on the country’s highest court 1916-1939. He was known as an ardent Progressive and supporter of free speech, the right to organize and the right of privacy. He was the first person of Jewish faith to serve on the U.S Supreme Court.

“The City of Port Huron is proud to announce that City Clerk Cyndee Jonseck has been recognized by the Michigan Fair Elections Institute Sunlight Award for her dedication and service to maintaining accuracy and transparency in the voting process,” said the city on its Facebook page. “Jonseck was recognized as a Responsive Advocate for her efforts in identifying and resolving redundancies in voter registration files.”

“We are incredibly proud of Cyndee and the well-deserved recognition she’s received,” said City Manager James Freed in a statement. “Her commitment to ensuring elections are open, fair and honest reflects the highest standards of public service. Cyndee is a leader in our community who sets the tone for integrity and professionalism in the City of Port Huron.”

Jim Soto sits on the city’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

“Cyndee is damn good at what she does,” said Soto on Facebook. “Whatever awards or accolades she gets, they are deserved.”
