Zeeland Public Schools is turning to a longtime teacher and leader to serve as the next director of Z-Quest.
The district announced June 10 that Allison Nelson will take over as the school’s director, effective with the coming school year. Nelson has been with ZPS in a variety of roles since 2010, both in the classroom and in leadership roles.
“Allison’s wide range of experiences, combined with her heart for students and staff, make her a strong fit for this next chapter at ZQuest,” Jon Voss, assistant superintendent of administrative services, wrote in a release. “We’re excited to see her leadership continue to grow in this new role.”
Nelson is “known for her empathy, empowerment and tenacity” and brings a “student-centered, relationship-driven leadership style” to the school, ZPS wrote in a release.
Nelson taught technology to young students, and has been a department chair and member of various committees in the district. Most recently, she’s been the ZPS Trauma and Resilience Coach, providing professional development, staff coaching and student support throughout the district.
Nelson earned her bachelor’s degree at Hope College and master’s degree at the University of Michigan. She’s taught as an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University.
Z-Quest is a K-8 school with a balanced calendar and focus on project-based learning. The school is located in a wing of Roosevelt Elementary School. The school year runs from mid-August through mid-June, with breaks throughout the year.
