Wills sets personal record in high jump, finishes first at Hastings

HASTINGS — The Three Rivers track and field team had a successful showing at the Hastings Invitational held on Friday evening. There were plenty of Division 1 and Division 2 schools with strong teams at the event, which was a MITCA scoring meet where each team in attendance earned points toward its MITCA team score.

The Three Rivers boys placed third overall with 1328.5 points. Scoring 1371.5 team points and taking first place was Caledonia while Hudsonville was second with 1355.5 team points.

The Three Rivers girls finished ninth at 647 points.

“Overall, it was a great night of racing against some high-level teams,” Three Rivers coach Jason Muckel said. “Our athletes did some things which we feel like we are only going to continue to grow.”

David Wills finished first overall in the high jump event. He cleared 6-6 feet, which set a new personal record. It also qualified him for the MHSAA state finals as the Hastings Invitational was an early qualifier for individuals.

The Cats won a pair of relays.

The 800 relay saw Peyton Muzzey, Elijah Craig, Canada Marzett and Blake Stewart post a time of 1:31.28. Three Rivers won the mile relay as well with Brayden Carpenter, DJ Fuller, Jonah Zietlow and Charlie Brauer run a time of 3:28.63.

Stewart was second in the 200 dash in 22.75 seconds; Brauer was second in the 400 in 51.42; Carter Rice ran to second in the 110 hurdles in 15.63; Fuller came in third in the 110 hurdles in 15.63; Fuller was third in the 300 hurdles in 40.90; the 400 relay team of Stewart, Muzzey, Craig and Marzett was second in 43.31.
