GAYLORD – Wednesday was a great night for Cheboygan volleyball in more ways than one.
First, the Chiefs opened their season with a 3-1 victory (25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 25-15) at Gaylord.
During the match, Cheboygan senior libero Presley Chamberlain reached an impressive milestone by surpassing 1,000 career digs. Chamberlain was one of Cheboygan’s leaders, tallying 18 digs.
Among the other top Cheboygan performers included Makaela Steiner (35 assists), Diem Schley (15 kills), Olivia Patrick (eight kills, 20 digs), Abi Babcock (seven aces, four kills), and Tessa Lake (five kills).
The Chiefs also captured a triumph for first-year varsity coach Jordan Barrette, who previously coached the Cheboygan junior varsity squad.
“The team worked great,” Barrette said. “They were working together and communicating well. It was a great way to start the season, and I’m beyond proud of how they played.”
Cheboygan travels to compete in the Pellston Invitational on Saturday.

Kerry-Ann Ming, Mackinaw City – Finished with 19 kills, 40 digs and seven aces at the Mackinaw City Invitational on Aug. 20.
Rian Esper, Mackinaw City – Tallied 35 assists and 18 digs at the Mackinaw City Invitational.
Alaina Brown, Mackinaw City – Recorded 37 digs, 14 kills and six aces at the Mackinaw City Invitational.
Poppy Wallace, Mackinaw City – Registered nine kills, 12 digs and four aces at the Mackinaw City Invitational.
Lanie Irwin, Pellston – Finished with 39 kills, 22 digs and 10 aces at the Mackinaw City Invitational.
Breanna Willis, Pellston – Tallied 56 assists, 24 digs, 11 aces and nine kills at the Mackinaw City Invitational.
Ella Klungle, Pellston – Registered nine kills, eight aces and seven digs at the Mackinaw City Invitational.

Mackinaw City Boys – Earned first as a team at the Rock-N-Roll Relays in Engadine on Aug. 19.
Braylon Currie and Ben Strittmatter, Mackinaw City – Captured first (35:36) at the Rock-N-Roll Relays.
Knox Wilson and Tanyon Pierce, Mackinaw City – Finished fifth (38:26) at the Rock-N-Roll Relays.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Cheboygan Girls – Finished first as a team at the Larissa Vartti Invitational.
Cloee Rupp, Cheboygan – Earned fourth place (23:35) and medaled at the Larissa Vartti Invitational.
Emily Kruczynski and Ava Thompson, Mackinaw City – Claimed 10th (58:26) at the Rock-N-Roll Relays.
BOYS SOCCER
Hayden Wheelock and Hunter Lockwood, Cheboygan – Each scored a goal at Kingsley on Aug. 21.

Lee Chatfield, Burt Lake NMCA – Finished with five goals and two assists in a win at Oscoda on Aug. 19 and netted two goals in a home victory over Roscommon on Aug. 21.
Noah Chatfield, Burt Lake NMCA – Had two goals and two assists in a win at Oscoda and added another goal in a triumph over Roscommon.

NMCA coach Rusty Chatfield: “This was a huge conference win for us. Roscommon is a tough team and swept both games against us last year. I was proud of our guys for their effort today. Lee and Noah Chatfield gave us some much-needed creativity and finishing touch up top for us. They worked well together and had great combinations.”
GIRLS GOLF
London Ingalsbe and Gabrielle Melonas, Cheboygan – Both players shot a 113 score and tied for 25th at the Traverse City St. Francis Invitational on Aug. 21.
