Where MDOT bridge, road, ramp repairs will impact metro Detroit traffic

Another week of summer means more construction in the Great Lakes State and metro Detroit.

From road repairs following a vehicle fire on Interstate 75 to the start of a multiyear closure part of the Restore 94 project in Wayne County, Michigan Department of Transportation construction teams will have a busy weekend and upcoming week.

As construction continues, roadwork can be weather-dependent and could change. A map of construction locations can be found at Michigan.gov/drive.

Here’s the latest update:

I-696 ramps will be closed until mid-August

Starting Thursday, June 4, the Michigan 1/Woodward Avenue ramp to westbound Interstate 696 will close until mid-August. The westbound I-696 ramp to M-1 is already closed and is expected to reopen in mid-August, according to MDOT.

On Monday, June 8, the northbound and southbound I-75 ramps to westbound I-696 will reopen. The ramp from westbound I-696 to I-75 is expected to reopen in mid-August.

I-96 closing at I-275

On Friday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., westbound Interstate 96/Michigan 14 will be closed from Interstate 275 to Beck Road for emergency road repair, according to MDOT. Traffic will be detoured to northbound I-275 to westbound I-96/696 to southbound U.S.-23 to M-14. Local traffic can reenter westbound M-14 at Beck Road.

I-75 lane closures in Oakland County, Detroit

Starting Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. and lasting until Sunday, June 14, southbound I-75 will be reduced from five lanes to one lane from 12 Mile Road to Nine Mile Road in Detroit, according to MDOT.

The repair follows a vehicle fire on southbound I-75 south of Nine Mile that requires concrete removal and replacement, which takes over a week. Once the concrete is set, two lanes will be open for approximately a week to allow the concrete to cure.

On Friday at 9 p.m., northbound and southbound I-75 are closing between McNichols Road and Seven Mile Road for the demolition of the Savannah Street/Oakland Avenue bridge over I-75, north of Nevada Street. The road is expected to reopen on Monday, June 8, at 5 a.m. The detour will be the service drive, according to MDOT.

The following ramps will also be closed:

I-96 express/local closing

Starting Friday at 7 p.m., westbound I-96 express and local lanes will be closed from I-94 to M-39/Southfield Freeway for Hubbell Avenue bridge deck demolition. The closure lasts until Monday, June 8, at 5 a.m.

The following ramps to westbound I-96 will also be closed:

Restore 94 weekend work

Westbound I-94 will have one lane open from Oakwood Boulevard to Wayne Road from Friday, June 5, at 8 p.m. to Monday, June 8, at 5 a.m., according to MDOT.

On Saturday and Sunday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., the westbound ramp from Vining Road and the southbound Vining Road ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed. At the same time, the westbound I-94 ramp to Wayne Road and the northbound Wayne Road ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed.

Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., eastbound and westbound I-94 from Middlebelt Road to Inkster Road is expected to have intermittent 15-minute stoppages.

I-94 work lasting past the weekend

Starting Saturday, June 6, at 5 a.m. and lasting until 2028, the eastbound and westbound Ecorse Road ramps to I-94 will be closed, according to MDOT. This portion of the Restore 94 project changes the Ecorse Road entrance ramps so traffic will merge onto I-94 from the right instead of the left.

Starting Monday, June 8, at 9 a.m. and lasting until spring 2027, eastbound and westbound I-94 ramps to northbound and southbound Michigan 39/Southfield Freeway will be closed for reconstruction of the bridge carrying M-39 over Ecorse Creek between I-94 and Outer Drive.

The eastbound detour is to go farther east on I-94 to westbound U.S.-12/Michigan Avenue to M-39. The westbound detour is to take westbound U.S.-12/Michigan Avenue to go farther west on I-94 to northbound U.S.-24/Telegraph Road to M-39. The detour may take additional time to travel as U.S.-24 at U.S.-12 at U.S.-12 has emergency bridgework blocking a lane.
