High school students don’t have to wait any longer to find out this year’s Advanced Placement test scores, according to the College Board, a nonprofit organization created to improve access to higher education for American students.
AP exams, taken each May, test students’ mastery of a first-year college courses that students take during high school, and are scored on a scale from 1-5. The tests determine whether incoming college students can earn university credit by skipping some general education courses. Numerous courses of study and exams are offered through the program.

How many students earn college credit?
In the last decade, the College Board said, the number of U.S. public high school graduates who have taken an AP Exam increased by 65%. At the same time, colleges across the country have added over 5,000 new AP-related policies.
Today, half of students entering four-year colleges start with some credit from AP courses. Two our of three AP students earn at least some college credit, the organization said.
Today, over 1 million high school students take AP courses in 36 subject disciplines, and their number is growing, according to the Progressive Policy Institute. According to the College Board, the number of total AP examinees doubled from 2003 to 2013 (going from 514,163 to 1,003,430). About a quarter of those examinees are minorities.
Do colleges accept all AP credits?
Eighty-six percent of the top 153 universities and colleges in the United States restrict the awarding of AP credit, denying students hundreds of millions in tuition savings, Paul Weinstein Jr. wrote in a PPI article.
“Only a handful of colleges deny AP credit altogether, but many others restrict the granting of credits. As a result, students who start their undergraduate studies thinking they have enough AP credits to graduate a semester or year early often discover their school has denied some or all of their AP coursework,” the report states.
Weinstein found that only 25% of schools studied accepted credits in all subject areas, and that many restricted credits based on test scores event when the score indicates the student knows the subject. Other schools capped the number of AP credits they will accept.
How long have AP classes been available?
AP’s origins lie in a 1952 study by three preparatory schools (Lawrenceville School, Phillips Academy, and Phillips Exeter Academy) and three universities (Harvard, Princeton, and Yale) that recommendedallowing high school seniors to study college level material and to take examinations that (dependingon the score achieved) would enable them to get college credit for their work, the PPI said.
The report led to the creation of the AP program, run by the College Board, a nonprofit organization.
