Weather service says temps could fall into 20s Sunday, killing plants

A frost advisory and freeze watch are in place across much of Michigan, including the Lansing area, for late Saturday night, April 18, into Monday morning, April 20, the National Weather Service said.

“Showers and thunderstorms will continue along and ahead of a cold front for the eastern third of the country. Much cooler weather will filter in behind this cold front along and east of the Rockies,” the National Weather Service said. “The rainfall for the Great Lakes region could prolong the ongoing flooding.”

The frost advisory is in place from 2-10 a.m. Sunday. The freeze watch is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday.

“Temperatures as low as 26 will result in frost formation,” the weather service said. “For the freeze watch, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 20 possible.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered,” the weather service warned.

The advisory is in effect for Saginaw, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee, Monroe, Muskegon, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson counties.

Friday, the high in Lansing reached 74 degrees the weather service said, but the area won’t see similar highs for some time.

In Lansing, the weather service said, temperatures will fall to about 33 degrees overnight Saturday before rebounding to only 46 degrees on Sunday with strong winds up to 28 mph.

Sunday night, lows in the Lansing area could fall to 24 degrees with light winds.

Monday again will be cool, only about 46, with lows Monday night falling again to about 33 degrees.
