A Warren man accused of stabbing a dog and attacking two people last month has been bound over on felony charges, the Macomb Cunty Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday.
Judge Steven M. Bieda of 37th District Court made the decision on James Vigneau’s case during a preliminary examination Thursday.
Vigneau is charged with killing/torturing animals in the second degree, a seven-year felony, assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony, and habitual offender-fourth offense.
The 42-year-old is scheduled to be arraigned on June 15.
An attorney representing him was not listed in court records Monday.
Authorities allege Vigneau was asked to leave a Warren residence where his friends lived after he made inappropriate comments on May 17. He then pulled out a knife and went toward a man and his daughter, according to investigators.
When the family dog came to protect its owners, Vigneau stabbed the pet two times in the mouth and once in the nose, prosecutors reported.
The canine’s injuries were not fatal, officials said.
“Those who abuse animals should expect to face the full consequences of the law,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in a release. “Animal cruelty is a deliberate act of violence, and my office will not tolerate it. We will vigorously prosecute individuals who harm, neglect, or exploit animals and seek appropriate penalties to protect both animals and the public. Every case will be treated with the seriousness it deserves.”
