Vote now for Bronson Battle Creek Athlete of the Week for Jan. 19-24

BATTLE CREEK — Meet the most recent nominees for Battle Creek Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.

Each week during the high school sports season, we will ask our readers to vote for the top performance of the week in all high school sports, taking a look at events from Monday-Saturday.

Make sure to vote early and often for your pick, as the winner will be featured in an Athlete of the Week spotlight story in the Sunday edition of the Enquirer. Fans can vote for their favorite athlete until Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Nominees for Bronson Battle Creek Athlete of the Week

Harland Begg

Marshall Wrestling

Marshall had three wrestlers in the top eight at the McGinnis-Evans Memorial Wrestling Invitational at Battle Creek Central, highlighted by Harland Begg winning his weight class at 285. Begg defeated Sam Tappenden of Bronson in the championship final.

Addi Dzwik

St. Philip Girls Basketball

St. Philip’s Addi Dzwik officially scored her 1,000th career point in girls high school basketball in a 60-37 win over Parchment on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Unofficially, it was the second time she reached the 1,000-point milestone, as Dzwik celebrated the accomplishment last year as well. Dzwik, who played varsity basketball for St. Philip as an eighth-grader, reached 1,000 career points last year. Dzwik needed 10 points against Parchment to reach her official 1,000-point barrier on Wednesday. She finished with a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds in the win. 

Sean Johnson

Harper Creek Wrestling

Harper Creek sophomore Sean Johnson also had something to prove as he came into the tournament seeded fifth before finishing as a champion at 215 pounds at the McGinnis-Evans Memorial Invitational at Battle Creek Central on Saturday. Johnson finished first by beating Sam Steinacker of Grandville in the finals, 7-1. Overall, Harper Creek finished fourth in the 18-team tournament.

Johnny Lake

Pennfield Boys Basketball

Pennfield senior Johnny Lake scored his 1,000th career point in Pennfield’s 57-49 win over Parma Western on the road on Friday, Jan. 23. Lake went into the game needing 16 points to reach the 1,000-point career mark. Lake finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
