The MHSAA Division 4 district championship-winning Onaway softball team was voted by readers as the Cheboygan Daily Tribune’s high school sports athlete of the week for May 26-30.
The Cardinals won this week’s poll by capturing 49.89 percent of the vote, which beat out Mackinaw City junior softball player Rian Esper, who collected 31.46 percent of the vote.
The poll opened on Monday morning, June 1, and closed on Thursday night, June 4.
This was the final athlete of the week poll for the 2026 Cheboygan-area spring sports season.
Here were this week’s candidates:
Tessa Lake, Cheboygan Softball – Hammered a two-run homer, doubled and scored two runs in a district semifinal against Boyne City.
Gus Carper, Inland Lakes Baseball – Went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a district semifinal win over Pellston.
Rian Esper, Mackinaw City Softball – Recorded two hits and scored two runs in a district semifinal against Pellston.
Onaway Softball Team – Repeated as district champions by beating Inland Lakes in the final.
Pellston Softball Team – Beat Harbor Light to earn its first district title since 2023.
