The Westland bakery and cake shop that went viral for its ugly lamb Easter cake now has a new version.
Homestead Kitchen Artisan Cake Shop owner Trina Staats is selling cookies with an edible design of its hideous Easter lamb cake that started as an April Fool’s joke. Staats told the Free Press she began selling the cookies more than a week ago.
“We’d been playing around with other ideas to incorporate the ugly lamb,’ Staats said.
The original April post showing a not-too-pretty lamb cake garnered more than 4 million views at the time, resulting in a “sell-out” weekend for the small business and was featured by TMZ, the Detroit Free Press reported. A follow-up post days later showed a nicely decorated lamb with a message assuring customers that the ugly lamb cake was an April Fool’s joke and not how the bakery’s baked goods normally appear.
The basic cookie is the bakery’s signature sugar cookie with tender royal icing.
“We roll them thick,” she said. “They are popular for birthdays and weddings.”
With the cookies, Staats said they’re having a little fun with it. For Memorial Day, the bakery put a trucker’s cap with the words “Merica” on the hat.
“It was just a fun, silly patriotic cookie,” she said.
Staats said a customer did order ugly lamb cake for a graduate.
“We did it just like the picture and added a grad cap as well,” she said.
Staats, who was a cottage baker before opening the Westland bakery, which is now in its sixth year, said she was very surprised that the Easter cake went viral.
“I thought it was a silly little joke. I still get a lot of traction online from it. It’s just kind of funny,” she said.
Staats said they’ll likely do something fun for the summer and other fun themes, including Halloween.
Homstead Kitchen’s specialty, Staats said, is mostly wedding cakes, dessert tables and all kinds of custom cakes. The retail storefront, 8036 N. Wayne Road in Westland, is open Fridays and Saturdays.
