Viral Mountain Dew-flavored ice cream returns at metro Detroit parlor

Mountain Dew lovers in metro Detroit are in for a frozen treat this week.

The viral Mountain Moo homemade pop-flavored ice cream at Dairy Whip, 26215 Plymouth Road in Redford, returned on Friday, July 17, and will be available until Sunday, July 26.

The flavor is similar to a Dole Whip or sherbet, and is dairy-free and vegan on its own, said owner Cody Hutchinson. It is also available as a twist with regular vanilla soft serve.

Cody Hutchinson said the flavor was her husband Josh Hutchinson’s “kind of crazy idea.” It debuted in 2021 and has returned once or twice a year since.

“He came up with the recipe,” she said. “He had an idea one day, and he started concocting it.”

Cody Hutchinson said Dairy Whip didn’t expect it to become a favorite of regular customers or that people would drive from around Michigan and sometimes from Ohio to try it.

The ice cream shop has 11 specialty soft serve flavors, eight vegan soft serve flavors, 18 hand packed flavors, and a number of specialty sundaes, milkshakes and more.

Flavors of the week rotate. Usually there is one pop-flavored ice cream for the months of June, July and August, Cody Hutchinson said. In June, that flavor was Faygo Rock and Rye. The August flavor is not yet decided. Usually Mountain Moo comes once a year, but they have served it twice in one summer before, Hutchinson said.

Dairy Whip is open 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
