UFO Bar, Spot Lite closing doors in Detroit this month

Two iconic Detroit bars are set to close at the end of this month.

Spot Lite, 2905 Beaufait St., will have its last day on Sunday, June 28. UFO Bar, 2110 Trumbull, will have its last day on Tuesday, June 30, according to a post shared on social media by the venues and their owners, Roula David and Jesse Cory.

“After a lot of thought and consideration, we have decided to close this chapter in our lives and move away from nightlife,” according to the post on Instagram and Facebook.

Spot Lite is a music venue, art gallery, bar and record store that opened in 2021. It is a 7,900 square-foot venue housed in a repurposed Beyster Lumber warehouse, according to its website.

“Spot Lite has been the most meaningful project of my life for the past 5 years,” according to the post. “As an Arab-American woman, I have always seen joy as a form of resistance. From the pandemic to troubling times locally and globally, we have all been able to reconnect on this dance floor to find joy and community.”

Spot Lite has also been the home of Cairo Coffee. The coffee company will move out of the Spot Lite building after its last day on June 28 and reopen inside 27th Letter Books on Michigan Avenue on Wednesday, July 8, according to a post on its Instagram Tuesday.

David purchased UFO Factory in 2024. A new record store and cocktail bar called Detroit Vinyl Bar plans to open at the location after the current bar closes, according to the shared post.

“UFO Bar is a special place that lived a big life before we took it over,” according to the post. “For the past two years, we’ve tried our best to honor the legacy and add our own spin to it. The team there has been dedicated to do so, and we are grateful to them for their work and dedication to the community that they have built.”

Dozens have commented on the post about the closure, saying they will miss the venues known for their music and atmospheres.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of our patrons, artists, dancers, and most of all, our team that made the party happen each night,” according to the post by the venues. “Thank you for believing in Spot Lite and helping make her what she became.”
