Two bed-and-breakfasts in Saugatuck, Michigan were voted as some of the best in the nation

Michigan’s lakeside establishments often show off the state’s beauty, and two bed-and-breakfasts in Saugatuck were featured among the best in USA TODAY’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards.

“If you’re looking to experience the charm and hospitality of a destination, staying at a bed-and-breakfast can be a winning idea. They offer a more intimate setting, where guests can get to know the hosts as well as other travelers,” USA TODAY said.

Among USATODAY’s search for the best getaway’s in the nation from North Carolina to California, two bed-and-breakfasts in Saugatuck in southwest Michigan placed in the best bed-and-breakfast category.

In third place, the Judson Heath Colonial Inn earns its flowers from its rustic look and amenities, and the Wickwood Inn takes the No. 6 spot for its modern suites and menu — all in the heart of Saugatuck.

In a previous 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards, Saugatuck placed as one of the best small towns in the Midwest. Known as the “art coast of Michigan,” Saugatuck has plenty to explore from its state parks, fine dining and art exhibits.

In addition to Saugatuck’s bed-and-breakfasts, Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel placed seventh in the ranking as one of the best destination resorts.

Located in downtown Saugatuck at 510 Butler St., the Inn offers 11 unique guest rooms including a bungalow. The location allows guests to explore shops, pubs or events happening downtown, or plan a beach day as Lake Michigan is minutes away.

“From the cozy charisma of a standard room to the luxurious sprawl of an estate suite, no two rooms at the Wickwood are alike,” Wickwood Inn said online. “Unique antiques and accessories, plush Vispring beds, soothing renovated bathrooms: pure, sumptuous comfort awaits you.”

The Inn also includes a farm-to-table menu built by executive chef Rose Duong, serving the seasonal new American breakfast, and snacks throughout the day such as fresh-baked cookies and charcuterie boards.

What is unique about the Judson Heath Colonial Inn?

Established in 1837, before the Inn was a bed-and-breakfast it was a stagecoach shop and a tavern. After a full renovation the Inn offers eight rooms with outdoor seating, gourmet breakfasts in the morning and another immersive look into downtown Sauguatuck, at 607 Butler St.

The “Elton” room on the third floor includes a jacuzzi, tilted rain shower, flat screen TV and a view of the garden and village.

“Lounge on our grand terrace overlooking lively Butler St. Unwind on our spacious deck to cool jazz and reggae shaded by 100 yr old maple and walnut trees, or get a bottle of wine and wander the path through our Japanese garden,” the Judson Heath Colonial Inn said online.
