Trieu: Blake Jenkins, four-star cornerback, commits to Michigan football

Michigan received a Thursday night commitment from Katy (Texas) Tompkins cornerback Blake Jenkins.

Rated a four-star recruit by the Rivals Industry rankings, Jenkins held offers from Texas, Vanderbilt, Houston and others. In the days leading up to the decision, the Commodores were believed to be leading, but the Wolverines made a strong close.

Jenkins gives Michigan a corner who combines size (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) with speed (4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash).

Michigan offered following Jenkins’ junior season, but the new staff made a stronger push late in the winter. Heading into early spring, the Wolverines got Jenkins to make an unofficial visit in April.

“First off, he has the size to take on a true No. 1 receiver on the outside,” said Greg Powers of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. “He’s big, strong, physical and he has great hips. He can turn and run with anybody. He’s versatile. I think can play multiple positions in the secondary which helps his roster value.

“He plays for a 6A team so he’s battle-tested and plays in a very tough district. So not only does he go against top guys in practice but also the elite of the elite under Friday night lights every week.”

Michigan cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford took the lead in recruiting Jenkins, who is the 16th commit in the Wolverines’ 2027 class.

Jenkins joins Tavares Harrington, Darius Johnson and Charles Woodson Jr. in the secondary class. He’s also the third commit in the class from Texas.

Notable weekend officials

Michigan is trending in a good direction for Oceanside (California) offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo, a 6-4, 280-pound guard who will visit this weekend.

The Wolverines are hosting four-star defensive tackle Seth Tillman from Rock Hill (South Carolina) South Pointe, who would be a major addition to the class.

Tight end Christian Hanshaw, a 6-5, 230-pound product of American Fork (Utah), will also take his official visit, as the Wolverines hope to pull a West Coast upset over UCLA, Utah and BYU.
