Detroit — The Tigers before the game Thursday put reliever Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation.

Lefty Drew Sommers was called up to take his spot in the bullpen.

Both Jansen and Casey Mize had more imaging done Thursday morning.  Both left the 4-0 win over the Angels early, Mize after four innings and Jansen after nine pitches, and both were believed to be dealing with groin strains.

Mize, a starting pitcher, was not immediately placed on the IL.

“In the short-term, a bullpen move is the most obvious because of the availability of the ‘pen,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said. “We’re trying to have as full a team as we can.”

Mize recently had returned from a three-week stay on the injured list with a similar strain in the right groin area. Wednesday was his third start back. He said afterward that he didn’t think this one was as severe as the previous strain.

Jansen also had worked through a right groin issue earlier in the season, sitting out five days before returning. He looked uncomfortable Wednesday night running to first base on a ground ball. He got two outs in the ninth but he called for the trainers after walking Mike Trout on four pitches.

The irritation that Jansen felt in his groin area was likely caused by irritation and inflammation of the pelvic.
