Tigers add Troy Watson to 40-man roster, move Will Vest to 60-day IL

Anaheim, Calif. — The Tigers made a move Sunday to keep 29-year-old right-hander Troy Watson in the organization.

They purchased his contract from Triple-A Toledo and then optioned him back to Toledo. The move was made to add Watson to the 40-man roster. He had language in his contract that would’ve allowed him to sign with a team overseas, either in Japan or Korea, unless he was on the 40-man roster.

The Tigers acquired Watson from the Blue Jays in August 2024. Primarily a starter, he had a productive season last year between Double-A Erie and Toledo, going 8-3 with a 2.75 ERA.

With the Mud Hens this season, he’s posted a 3.33 ERA and a 1.109 WHIP.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, reliever Will Vest (stress fracture in his elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list. He will be eligible to come off on Aug. 27, which is near where the original timeline was projected.
