Thrift shopping for these back-to-school clothing trends

MONROE COUNTY, MI  — Oversized and relaxed silhouettes are the fashion trends for this year’s school season, according to a Google search.

Students are grabbing bold animal prints, camo and floral patterns, baggy cargo pants and denim paired with graphic T-shirts and sweater vests.

Data shows athletic inspired looks from decades past are making a comeback. Track suits and windbreakers will be popular. Cropped jackets and graphic backpacks top the list of fashion choices and thrifted items are offering a more personalized look.

Some savvy shoppers are enhancing their wardrobes at resale shops where some of the best finds are early in the week when new donations are processed.

Wednesday and Saturday afternoons are busy shopping days at the Thrift Shop Association of Monroe.

“Thrift shopping has always been popular. People are thrifting more and more every day,” said Lorey Roop, Thrift Shop manager. “This time of year, we’re offering a basket sale with a few restrictions.”

The store is currently offering an August special, a $12 clothing basket sale. Customers can fill a hand-held basket with clothing. Some items in the store are excluded like wedding gowns, formals, men’s suits and outerwear. A list of items not included in the sale is posted on the door and in the store.

Roop said the thrift shop carries all types of clothing genres.

“I noticed when pricing things, we do have a lot of the baggy tops,” she said. “We see a big increase in shopping for back to school and also in November just before the holidays. During any peak times, we see things pick up.”
