Three General Motors plants to get $830M for gas pickups and SUVs

General Motors Co. on Wednesday announced another $830 million in investments at plants in Michigan and Ohio to support building more revamped gas-powered trucks and SUVs.

With the $830 million, GM said it has invested more than $6 billion in onshoring and other manufacturing in the United States in the past year. The latest round of money is going to plants in Romulus, Saginaw and Toledo.

“This $830 million investment is another clear signal of our commitment to these facilities, the exceptional people who work here and the customers who depend on the products we build every day,” said GM global manufacturing Senior Vice President Mike Trevorrow in a statement.

About $300 million is going to Romulus Propulsion Systems to increase 10-speed transmission production for next generation full-size trucks and SUVs. GM put $300 million into the plant late last year.

Saginaw Metal Casting Operations is getting $150 million to hike head casting volume for Gen 6 engines for full-size pickup trucks and Corvettes. And GM has poured another $80 million into Toledo Propulsion Systems for 10-speed transmissions for light-duty trucks.

About 3,000 employees work at the three plants getting the money.

“These investments mean greater job security for our members and stability for these facilities, which could not be more important to us,” UAW-GM Vice President Mike Booth said in a statement from GM. “The future of U.S. manufacturing is in our hands, and together we will shape it, define it and set up future generations of auto workers on the foundation of our success.”
