These parishes face low to medium risk of losing Masses in SE Michigan

More than 50 parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit face a low to medium risk of losing their weekend Masses and eventually closing under the archdiocese’s initial restructuring proposals.

The Archdiocese of Detroit last week finished releasing the draft models on future groupings of its more than 200 parishes under its two-year restructuring plan. Among the 90 parishes that were targeted for losing weekend Mass under at least one draft proposal, 36 were identified for Mass losses under all of the draft proposals in their respective planning areas.

Archdiocese officials have stressed that parishioners can respond and give feedback in an online survey through July 31.

“We do not want to assume our draft models are what’s best for every parish in the Archdiocese,” said Holly Fournier, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Detroit. “The purpose of sharing them was to generate the kind of feedback and dialogue that will help shape the final outcome.”

But the majority of parishes targeted for the possible loss of weekend Masses weren’t included in all of the draft models in their planning areas. What follows is a list of targeted parishes based on the number of draft models where they are identified. .

Parishes identified under one model

More than 20 parishes across the archdiocese wouldn’t hold weekend Mass under just one of the models for their planning area.

They include these Planning Area 1 parishes: Moses the Black in Detroit, Christ the King in Detroit and SS. Peter and Paul (Jesuit) in Detroit.

The parishes include Most Holy Trinity in Detroit in Planning Area 2 and St. Raymond-Our Lady of Good Counsel in Detroit in Planning Area 3.

The parishes in Wayne County’s Planning Area 4 include Christ the Good Shepherd in Lincoln Park, St. Roch in Flat Rock and Our Lady of the Scapular in Wyandotte. In Wayne County’s Planning Area 7, Resurrection in Canton Township and St. Priscilla in Livonia have been targeted.

St. Anthony in Temperance has a low risk of losing Masses in Monroe County’s Planning Area 5.

The parishes in Oakland County’s Planning Area 8 include the Church of the Transfiguration in Southfield, Our Lady of Albanians in Southfield and St. Joseph in South Lyon. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Troy in Planning Area 9 and St. Rita in Holly in Planning Area 10 also would only stop holding weekend Mass under one model.

The same is true for these parishes in Macomb County’s Planning Area 12: St. Faustina in Warren, St. Francesco in Clinton Township, St. Louis in Clinton Township, St. Mark in Warren, St. Martin de Porres in Warren and St. Ronald in Clinton Township.

The only parish in Planning Area 15 to which this applies is St. Mary Burnside in North Branch.

Parishes without weekend Mass under two models

Some parishes wouldn’t hold weekend Mass under two of the models for their planning area.

They include these Planning Area 1 parishes: St. Mary of Redford in Detroit and SS. Peter and Paul (Westside) in Detroit.

They include St. Cunegunda in Detroit in Planning Area 2, St. Augustine & St. Monica in Detroit in Planning Area 3, and St. John the Baptist in Monroe in Planning Area 5.

The Planning Area 6 parishes include St. Anselm in Dearborn Heights and St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Dearborn.

St. William in Walled Lake in Planning Area 8 is among the parishes that wouldn’t hold weekend Mass under two of the models.

The Planning Area 11 parishes include Holy Innocents-St. Barnabas in Roseville, St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park, St. Margaret of Scotland in St. Clair Shores and St. Matthew in Detroit.

The parishes include St. Louise de Marillac in Warren in Planning Area 12 and SS. John and Paul in Washington Township in Planning Area 13.

The Planning Area 14 parishes include Holy Trinity in Port Huron and St. Edward on the Lake in Lakeport.

The archdiocese presented four draft models for Planning Area 9. The ones that wouldn’t hold weekend Masses in two of four models include Christ Our Light in Troy, Our Lady of La Salette in Berkley, Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Oak Park, St. Justin–St. Mary Magdalen in Hazel Park, St. Vincent Ferrer in Madison Heights and St. Owen in Bloomfield Township.

In Oakland County’s Planning Area 10, the parishes targeted in two of the four models include Sacred Heart in Auburn Hills, St. John Fisher Chapel University in Auburn Hills and St. Perpetua in Waterford.

Parishes with no weekend Mass in three, but not all models

St. Lucy in Troy in Planning Area 9 wouldn’t hold weekend Mass in three of four models.

Prince of Peace in West Bloomfield Township wouldn’t have weekend Mass in two of the models for Planning Area 8 and in one of the models for Planning Area 10.

St. Thomas More in Troy wouldn’t hold weekend Mass under one of the models for Planning Area 9 and two of the models for Planning Area 10.

Parish with no weekend Mass in four of five models

Divine Providence in Southfield appears in models for Planning Area 8 and Planning Area 9. In four of those five models, the parish wouldn’t hold weekend Mass.

The archdiocese is planning to announce the final plans in April 2027, and the implementation of the plans is expected to begin on July 1 of that year.
