Detroit — United Auto Workers delegates decided late Wednesday who will run for regional positions leading the powerful union, with several races in Michigan and elsewhere shaping up to be competitive.
Delegates at the UAW’s constitutional convention in downtown Detroit earlier nominated candidates for president — including five challengers to incumbent Shawn Fain — along with secretary-treasurer and three vice president roles.
Then, delegates finalized the nominees for nine regional director positions. Altogether, the 14 leaders make up the union’s International Executive Board, which will chart the influential union’s direction as it gears up for another organizing push and major contract fights over the next four years, including with the Detroit Three. Ballots will be mailed out to the union’s roughly 400,000 members and 600,000 retirees late this summer.
Here’s who is running for regional positions:
Region 1, covering much of the eastern part of Michigan, including part of Detroit
Region 1A, covering most of Wayne County, including part of Detroit, and Monroe and Washtenaw counties
Region 1D, covering Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the western, northern and southern parts of the Lower Peninsula
Region 2B, covering Ohio and Indiana
Region 4, covering a broad swath of western and midwestern states
Region 6, covering most western states
Region 8, covering a broad swatch of southern states
Region 9, covering New Jersey and parts of New York and Pennsylvania
Region 9A, covering the New York City metro area and some states in the northeast
