OLIVE TWP. — With the help of paws and shovels, Harbor Humane officially started construction on a new adoption center June 23.
The building is part of the organizations $3.6 million capital project “Sheltering Hope,” which covers upgrades and the transformation of the nonprofit’s current property at 14345 Bagley St.
“Our campaign is aptly named ‘Sheltering Hope’ … because it’s about so much more than bricks and mortar,” said Executive Director Jen Self-Aulgur. “It’s about creating a stronger future for everyone who walks though our doors, whether on two legs or four.”
The new 5,000-square-foot adoption center will include private spaces for adoptions, improved accommodations for pets, and new technology with detailed bios, videos and virtual meet-and-greets. The center’s lobby, adoption counseling office, information desk and administrative space will also move into the building.
“This investment will allow us to strengthen the human-animal bond, create more successful adoptions and provide a welcoming environment that reflects the compassion and hope at the heart of our mission,” Self-Aulgur said.
The current facility, built in 1988, will also see a remodel — including a dedicated species-specific admission area and exam rooms, centrally located food preparation areas, expanded storage and laundry, new HVAC and a private space for animals and owners to say goodbye.
The renovations will also see an upgraded breakroom and additional restrooms for staff. The project includes new outdoor spaces, too, like an adoption garden, rainbow bridge memorial and walking trail.
“Our goal is not to simply house more animals, but to provide a higher level of care for every animal we serve, every staff member who dedicates their life to this work, and every community member who turns to (us) for support,” Self-Aulgur said.
The campaign has reached nearly $1.8 million of the $3.6 million goal, and donations are still being accepted. To learn more, email executive@harborhumane.org or call 616-399-2119 x118.
