A teenager was killed last weekend after a collision involving a four-wheeler in Monroe County.
Harvey Wayne Richards, 14, was on the Honda TRX250 when it crashed into a Chevrolet Traverse backing out of a driveway in an attempt to drive on Bacon Road in Summerfield Township, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The Dundee resident and Ethan Lee Kitts, 17, of Petersburg were not wearing helmets and ejected in the collision, according to the statement.
Richards died in the crash, while Kitts was taken to Toledo Promedica Hospital. He was listed in critical condition Saturday. Neither of the two occupants of the Traverse reported injuries, sheriff’s officials said.
There were no updates to the case for the public as of Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
A Facebook post from Richards’ father says his son died a day before his 15th birthday.
“He was passenger on an ATV at some kid’s house we didn’t know he was at,” the post reads. “This 17-year-old kid was driving the ATV a car backed out of the driveway and Harvey was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Today would have been his 15th birthday, we should be making his birthday breakfast before we went golfing but instead I sit here and cry wondering what if.”
Off-highway vehicles including four-wheelers are responsible for more than 800 deaths and roughly 100,000 emergency department-treated injuries annually, according to the latest data from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.
