STURGIS — The Sturgis volleyball team opened its season on Wednesday night at home.
The Trojans hosted White Pigeon, Coldwater and Buchanan. Each team played in a round robin style and saw the court three times.
Sturgis won two of its three matches. The orange and black bested White Pigeon 25-18, 25-15 and Coldwater 25-19, 22-25 and 25-12. Buchanan was the only opponent to get the best of Sturgis, winning in three sets at 26-24, 23-25 and 25-16.
“The Trojans played with lots of intensity throughout the night and never gave up on the ball,” Sturgis coach Brian Jordan said.
Angela Cary led the way with 21 kills for SHS. Cora Phillips recorded 18 kills and Kendall Oxender finished with 10 kills.
Chloe Patrick handed out 32 assists for Sturgis.
White Pigeon won one of three matches at Sturgis on Wednesday to open the season. The Lady Chiefs got the best of Buchanan, but fell to both Sturgis and Coldwater on the evening.
Kadance Smith led White Pigeon with a team-high 11 kills. She registered three blocks and two digs for the Chiefs.
“One and two overall for the evening with my eight-man varsity team isn’t a terrible way to start given the tough competition we came up against,” White Pigeon coach Melissa Gales said. “We play with every team and showed we will be a tough competitor this year.”
Kenlee Schrader handed out 25 assists with eight kills, Sadie McDaniel scored seven kills with six blocks. Grace Bontrager added seven kills with 15 total digs, Mable Post posted five kills with 18 digs. Addison Smith finished with 22 digs and five assists.
