The Lansing area could see severe weather Tuesday night, March 11, as thunderstorms move across the state.
On Tuesday morning, March 10, hazardous weather, winter weather and hydrologic outlook advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for thunderstorms that could causing localized flooding, quarter-sized hail, 60-mph gusts, lightning and even isolated tornadoes.
“The expected time frame for severe weather is between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m.,” the National Weather Service said. “The area most likely to see severe storms will be from Interstate 96 to the south. Large hail is the most probable threat. Tornadoes and damaging winds are possible as well with those threats being more likely, if they occur, towards I-94. Thunderstorm movement tonight will be rapidly off to the northeast at 50 to 60 mph.”
Highs in the Lansing area on Tuesday could reach 60 degrees by noon before falling in the afternoon.
By 7 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, up to 1.1 inches of rain is expected to accumulate in some places, according to the NWS Probabilistic Precipitation Portal. The heaviest rain is forecast in southwest Michigan.
The Lansing area is likely to see rain and sleet on Wednesday morning, the NWS said.
Rain is forecast to transition into freezing rain by Wednesday morning in northern Michigan — up to 0.2 of an inch of ice is expected across northern Michigan and northern areas in Michigan’s Thumb.
“Freezing rain is possible tonight into Wednesday morning along U.S. 10 across Central Lower Michigan,” the weather service said.
