With upgrades under a previous bond effort now complete, Saugatuck Public Schools is collecting input on a new series of possible projects for November 2026.
SPS is seeking community input on the potential bond proposal through an online survey at surveymonkey.com/r/spsbond26.
Superintendent Mark Neidlinger writes the measure is being designed to address “key facility issues” without increasing the current tax rate of 3.45 mills.
The letter highlights five priorities, including a new community recreation center on 50 acres of land off Wiley Road in Douglas, which the district purchased in 2025 using contingency funds from the previous bond effort and “strategic investment earnings.”
SPS is also considering a new early childhood center, as current programing operates in a small building next to Douglas Elementary. The size of the building, according to language in the survey, limits the district’s ability to meet area demand.
Officials are also focused on enhancing performing arts spaces (including sound, lighting, technology and furnishing upgrades at the high school) and school safety, as well as parking lot improvements, new buses and “moving transportation from Blue Star Highway.”
Saugatuck voters last approved a bond in March 2020. The $35.64 million approval followed failed proposals in 2018 and 2019. Projects included large-scale renovations at both Douglas Elementary School (completed in 2022-23) and Saugatuck Middle/High School (completed in 2025).
