The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office expressed its appreciation to Costuras Karla for her “extraordinary generosity and compassion in creating handmade teddy bears for children who have experienced victimization or traumatic situations,” the sheriff’s office said in an announcement.
“These comforting bears are uniquely crafted from retired deputy uniforms that have been taken out of service. What once represented law enforcement duty has now been transformed into something deeply personal, a source of reassurance, safety, and hope for a child facing one of the most difficult moments of their life.”
Sheriff Chad Spence said it shows service isn’t just about enforcement.
“It reflects the culture we are working to build within the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, one rooted in compassion, support, and care for those who need it most, our children,” he said in the announcement.
The initiative was led by Deputy Veronica Hoggard, and represents a collaborative effort to find meaningful ways to provide comfort to young victims during times of crisis.
