Hartley came under investigation after the task force learned he had reportedly been sharing child sexually abusive material online, according to a post on X by the Michigan State Police Third District Office. The post indicated evidence of his sharing of child pornography was uncovered during a search of his home.

Bad Axe Police Department Detective Phillip Deacons, who led the investigation for the task force, said evidence of animal abuse was also uncovered during the investigation, leading to the animal torture and crimes against nature charge. Deacons said the animal abuse was not related to the child sexually abusive material Hartley was accused of sharing.

Crimes against nature is punishable with up to life in prison. Distributing or promoting child sexually abusive material is punishable with up to 15 years in prison. Aggravated possession of child pornography is punishable with up to four years in prison. One of the charges for use of a computer to commit a crime is punishable with up to 10 years in prison and the other is punishable with up to four years. Unauthorized access to a computer is punishable with up to five years in prison. Third-degree animal torture is punishable with up to four years in prison.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 1 before District Court Judge Gregory Ross. Patrick Politano, who is listed as Hartley’s defense attorney, could not be reached for comment.

Hartley is being held in jail on a $10,000 bond.
