Two people are in custody after shots were fired in an attempted carjacking in Grosse Pointe Woods, authorities said.
The suspects allegedly brandished a firearm as they attempted to steal a motorist’s vehicle around 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of Anita Avenue, just west of Mack Avenue, according to a Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety press release.
The victim also possessed a firearm, according to authorities, and the suspects fled the scene in a light-color SUV after shots were fired, according to the release. No one was struck by the gunfire.
After officers arrived at the scene, law enforcement received a report that the suspects’ SUV was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Grosse Pointe Farms and that the suspects were attempting to flee the crash site.
Officers responded and arrested the suspects, according to the release. Investigators also recovered a firearm and the suspects’ SUV at the scene.
Authorities have not released additional details, including the suspects’ identities.
The incident is the latest involving allegations of carjacking in Metro Detroit.
Three Wayne County residents have been charged for allegedly carjacking a Sterling Heights man earlier this month.
On July 10, a Troy man told Detroit police he was carjacked on the city’s east side and that his 7-month-old son was in the stolen car. Police later said the man actually left his car voluntarily with the baby still inside.
In June, a St. Clair County man was ordered to stand trial for carjacking, home invasion and leading police on a chase on Interstate 94.
