Sherrone Moore updates Michigan football QB Mikey Keene, S Rod Moore injury status in camp

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The good news for Michigan football is that through two weeks of fall camp, there hasn’t been, as of yet, any serious injuries sustained (fans, you can knock on wood if that makes you feel better). But there also hasn’t been a lot of progress, at least as much as hoped, for two of the players returning from injury.

When the Wolverines brought in Fresno State transfer quarterback Mikey Keene, the expectation was that he would compete with freshman Bryce Underwood, if not start outright while Underwood got his feet wet. However, he missed all of spring, and he reportedly was limited in Saturday’s closed scrimmage, not participating with the ones and only doing some light work outside of the scrimmage.

On Tuesday, head coach Sherrone Moore said that Keene has been active in practice, but by the sounds of things, he’s obviously limited in what he’s available to do. Even so, Moore is optimistic that Keene will eventually be available, even if it’s not by the season opener on August 30.

“Yeah, he’s done a good bit,” Moore said. ”He’s participating at his rate that he can. And we’ll see as far as how much he can do and what he’ll do as we go through. But he’s been doing a good job for us and managing everything he needs to do.”

But Keene isn’t the only one working his way back who seems to not yet be a full go.

Safety Rod Moore suffered an ACL tear early in spring in 2024 and he’s had a few setbacks before getting back to running. Now he’s been doing some things, but comments made by transfer safety TJ Metcalf (who noted he’s really only seen Moore’s highlights) indicated that perhaps the senior captain isn’t a full go just yet.

His head coach isn’t sure if he’ll be back by the season opener or not, but did indicate that he is progressing and should see the field, at the very least, early in the season.

“He’s pushing. He’s been in walkthroughs,” Moore said. “Looks like he’s slowly, steadily going to get into some practice stuff. Sooner than later.”

Fall camp will continue for two and a half more weeks before the Wolverines host New Mexico for the season opener at The Big House.
