See which Battle Creek-area golfers advanced to the MHSAA state finals

COLDWATER – Marshall’s Clark Erwin will get his chance to chase down a state title after he finished as a regional runner-up in boys golf action this week.

Michigan High School Athletic Association boys golf regionals were held throughout the state this week as athletes looked to qualify for the upcoming state championships.

Marshall’s Erwin was runner-up and an individual state finals qualifier after posting a round of 70 at the Division 2 boys golf regional at Coldwater Golf Course on Tuesday, May 26. Freshman Bentley Coon of Parma Western was match medalist with a 68.

The Division 2 MHSAA state finals in boys golf will be held at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on June 5-6. Division 1 is set for the same weekend at Ferris State University, Division 3 will be in Battle Creek at Bedford Valley and Division 4 will be at Michigan State University.

Erwin qualified for the state finals as an individual. Charles Wilke of Gull Lake, who had a 75, also qualified for the state finals as an individual

Marshall finished fifth as a team with a score of 317. Colton Scherer and Henry Strand each had the second best score for the Redhawks at 82 to tie for 36th overall.

Harper Creek and Pennfield also competed at the Division 2 regional. Harper Creek was ninth as a team at 325 as Mack King and Jake Schragg each had a team low score of 77, missing out at qualifying as individuals by one stroke. Brendan Daugherty finished with an 80 with Cameron Baker a 91 and Carter Denton a 96.

Pennfield was 19th as a team at 373, led by Treven Lebreton with a 91 and Hudson Badger with a 92.

Division 1

Lakeview competed in a Division 1 regional at Dunham Hills Golf Course in Hartland. Lakeview finished 14th with a team score of 348. Charlie Forman had the low score of the day for the Spartans with an 82 with Peyton Sherk finishing with an 84, Josh Neal an 87 and Jay Hamric a 95.

Division 4

Area teams St. Philip, Climax-Scotts, Athens and Homer competed at a Division 4 regional at The Medalist in Marshall.

Low score for St. Philip was freshman Abe Senchuk with an 85 to take 11th overall. Brennen Godfrey had a 90 for Athens, which was 10th as a team. Senior Ryan Pejakovich led Climax-Scotts with a 95 as the Panthers finished 12th as a team. Homer had one golfer in the field in Gavin Lewallen, who shot a 101.
