Participants in the 102nd Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race have begun pouring into the Black River as they prepare for the race.
About 40 boats have docked along in Port Huron for the race, with another 150 to 160 expected in the next few days, according to Port Huron Harbormaster Mike Davenport.
The number of participants in this year’s race- is about the same as that of the 101st Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat race.
The boats typically dock from the mouth of the river up to the 10th Street Bridge, and Davenport said that will be no different this year.
Those wishing to view the boats or talk to the racers can stop anywhere along the river. Davenport said several of the fastest boats would be docked near the Huntington Bank on Water Street.
The race will begin Saturday, July 18, at 11:30 a.m. The race is split into divisions for two courses, the shore course which has racers follow the Michigan shoreline, and the Cove Island track in which racers sail to Cove Island before heading to Mackinac Island.
