Restaurant, residences to replace former home of Douglas Police Dept.

A mixed-use development is moving forward after site plan approval was provided by the Douglas Planning Commission on June 11.

The project will include a ground-floor restaurant and four second-floor residential units at the former police station, 47 W. Center St. The existing building will be demolished.

The project previously appeared before the commission in May, at which time officials provided feedback and tabled a decision. In a report provided to commissioners, Planning and Zoning Administrator Sean Homyen wrote the project has now obtained necessary approvals from the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Commissioners were largely in favor of the project, despite concerns about the applicant’s request for a parking requirement reduction. Officials noted similar requests were sought by and granted to neighboring businesses in the past.

In total, seven parking spaces will be required on-site, reduced from 50.

Commissioners also asked the applicant to consider the surrounding architecture when designing the building. Following discussion, the site plan was approved unanimously with conditions.
