Regrading 2023 NFL Draft: CBS says Detroit Lions aced picks

CBS felt the Detroit Lions aced the draft then. And they feel the Detroit Lions aced the draft now.

In its regrading of the 2023 NFL Draft, CBS’ Pete Prisco stuck with his initial A grade for the Lions’ draft class.

Here’s what Prisco wrote about the Lions’ 2023 NFL Draft class in review:

The Lions killed this draft. It started by taking running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the first and he has proven to be a star in this league. They followed that up by taking linebacker Jack Campbell in the first, tight end Sam LaPorta in the second and safety Brian Branch in the second. All four have been outstanding when on the field, but injuries have limited Branch and LaPorta some. The only other player still on the roster is sixth-round offensive lineman Colby Sorsdal. They missed on third-round quarterback Hendon Hooker and third-round defensive tackle Brodric Martin. – Pete Prisco, CBS

At the time, Prisco’s favorite pick was the Lions’ second-round selection of Sam LaPorta. LaPorta was a second-team All-Pro during his rookie season in 2023. Across his three-year NFL career thus far, LaPorta has caught 186 passes for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns.

The Lions’ two 2023 first-round choices of running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Jack Campbell have both proven to be home runs as well.

Gibbs was the NFL’s rushing touchdowns co-leader in 2024 and has been a three-time Pro Bowler. Campbell was a first-team All-Pro last season when he won the NFL’s Butkus Award.

Safety Brian Branch has seven career interceptions and was a Pro Bowler in 2024.
