A man was arraigned Wednesday on felony charges including first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Pontiac man.
Jonathan Mack, 36, of Pontiac is also charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, discharging a firearm in or at a building and carrying a concealed weapon, plus three counts of felony firearm, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
He’s accused of killing 28-year-old Kevonte Javon Smith on Saturday during an apparent robbery. Authorities said the two men knew each other.
“The senseless and tragic murder must have consequences for the perpetrator,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in the release. “I am proud of our team that brought the case to this point including the canine that helped find the murder weapon. We look forward to the accused being held fully accountable.”
At about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive for a reported shooting. They found Smith lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that the suspect had fled the area. Law enforcement used a K-9 unit and drones in the search, recovering the suspected murder weapon and clothing that the alleged gunman was wearing during the incident, Bouchard said.
Mack was arrested a short time later on Spokane Drive in Pontiac. He remains behind bars at the Oakland County Jail, where he’s being held without bond, authorities said.
Bouchard said the suspect was on probation for a drug conviction and has spent time in prison for a 2016 robbery conviction.
Online court records do not list an attorney for Mack.
His next hearing is slated for April 28. In Michigan, first-degree murder is punishable by a mandatory life sentence.
