Police are investigating a shooting on Thursday at Henry Ford St. John Hospital and Medical Center that left one person hurt.
Officers were called to the parking lot at the hospital on Moross Road at Mack Avenue about 11:50 p.m. for a report of shots fired, according to the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department.
Police arrived and found evidence that a shooting had occurred, authorities said in a statement. After investigating, they determined the gunfire involved the hospital’s security staff, according to officials.
One person was injured in the shooting and is being treated. A suspect has been detained, the public safety department said.
“At this time, the incident is considered resolved, and there is no threat to the public,” the department said.
The department is investigating the incident with the help of Michigan State Police.
Michigan State Police confirmed on X Friday that it is assisting in the investigation and that the shooting involved several suspects.
Henry Ford Health System officials said in a statement on Friday that someone shot at one of its security officers “while he was looking into reports of suspicious activity in our parking lot. Our officer fired back, hitting one of the suspects, who’s being treated at our hospital. … The safety and well-being of our team members, patients, and community is our top priority, and we are grateful our officer was unharmed.”
The health system also said the hospital is open and operating as normal.
Similar incidents have unfolded at Metro Detroit hospitals in the last two years.
Last August, a Detroit man allegedly shot and killed his ex-wife at Henry Ford Hospital in the city, where she worked. His trial in Wayne County Circuit Court is scheduled to begin on May 11, according to court records.
A Macomb County man on trial for allegedly shooting a co-worker inside a Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital parking structure last March is scheduled to appear in Macomb County Circuit Court next Thursday.
In 2024, a man was left in critical condition after he fired a gun at an employee at Sinai-Grace Hospital on Detroit’s west side and turned the weapon on himself.
