Two Ecorse men have been charged in connection with posing as construction workers and stealing about $65,000 in cash and jewelry from a Monroe County home.
Justin Andrew Ortiz, 34, and Matthew Lawrence Wisner, 31, were arraigned Friday in the First District Court of Monroe on charges of larceny over $20,000 and larceny in a building.
They each received a $75,000 bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Aug. 10 at 9 a.m.
Court records on Monday did not list attorneys representing the men.
How the men were caught
The men entered a Lambertville home on July 29 with the homeowners’ permission before stealing the cash, jewelry and multiple blank checks, according to a release from the Michigan State Police.
The homeowners’ video recording system showed the men fleeing a few minutes after entering with multiple items in their pockets, state police said.
The homeowners discovered the theft after the pair left and said they recognized one of the men from a construction company that had previously worked on their home, according to MSP.
The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office issued warrants. The MSP Fugitive Team located both suspects at a home in Ecorse on Thursday.
Members of the MSP Monroe and Metro South posts conducted a search warrant at the Ecorse residence, where they recovered jewelry and checks belonging to the victims along with more than $3,000 in cash, police said.
