Michigan basketball set to add NBA G League coach to staff

Michigan basketball continues to round out its coaching staff, this time with an outside-the-college-game hire.

The Wolverines are set to add Dylan Murphy, who most recently was coach of the Osceola Magic of the NBA G League, as an assistant coach, a person with knowledge of the move confirmed to the Detroit Free Press.

Before Murphy was coach in Osceola for the past three seasons, he was an assistant with the Orlando Magic (2020-23) for three years and served as the team’s basketball operations analyst from 2018-20. Murphy, who led the team to two first-place finishes in the Eastern Conference in three seasons, was also named the G League coach of the month in March 2025.

“It’s a work in progress,” Michigan coach Mike Boynton Jr. said of rounding out the staff earlier in the week. “There’s a process here that we have to go through. We’re following that process now, but I feel very confident that we’re going to be able to put together some really [good] experience from a wide variety of backgrounds that could bring different things to the table.”

Murphy got his start in the sport with three seasons (2013-16) as assistant coach of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the G League, including league title in the first year. The Mad Ants returned to the championship the following season. He then spent one season (2016-17) as a G League scout in the Atlanta Hawks organization. His only year in college ball came as a graduate assistant with Ball State (2017-18).

Murphy graduated from Columbia in 2012.

This is the second assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr. has added to his staff. The first was Mike Martin, who like Murphy, had coaching experience with 14 seasons leading his alma mater, Brown.

The Wolverines will likely add a third assistant coach to round out the roster, expected to have ties to the state to aid with in-state recruiting.
