Petoskey's Luke Pike emerging as a new playmaker for Northmen football

PETOSKEY — There are two kinds of ways to handle pressure and the unknown.

Be scared of the uncertainty and crumble when it comes, or embrace it and be excited about the challenge.

Petoskey football fans will soon find out where sophomore Luke Pike stands in that regard, but all early indications point to the latter as he makes his way into the spotlight on varsity.

“It’s definitely a lot of pressure, but it’s exciting and there’s definitely a lot of fun that’s going to come with it,” Pike said.

On a young team ready to follow up an undefeated regular season, district championship and 11-win campaign, Pike represents the future of Northmen football and is amped up to bring it into the present.

“You feel (the pressure) a little bit, but you’ve just got to be calm under that pressure and do what you can do,” Pike added.

What Pike can do appears to be a lot. As a sophomore, he’ll be young in every game he plays, though not to be confused with the wide-eyed type.

Petoskey is without a doubt looking for playmakers in 2025, and Pike looks like he’ll be one of those as a wide receiver and on the defensive side at linebacker.

There are gaudy numbers to replace, though.

He’s following two of the best receivers to come through Petoskey in Seth Marek and Mitch Eberhart, with Marek claiming every major statistical record there is. Right behind him is Eberhart.

He also follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Brian, who had his own success as a receiver at Petoskey.

Some might call that pressure, following those kind of seasons and an older sibling in the program. Pike sees it as opportunity and is taking it in stride.

“Just being yourself and doing things you can do, not trying to push it to do too much,” Pike said. “Just staying within yourself and knowing what you can do.”

Helping ease some of the preseason work to be done is the fact that Pike has been woking with fellow sophomore quarterback Lukas Nemec for years.

The two have built up a solid rapport with each other on the field, which should be on display right away.

“We’ve been throwing with each other for six years now I’d say,” Pike said. “It’s kind of just second nature, going out there and playing. It’s a lot of fun.”

At 6 foot and a built 180 pounds, Pike is already physically ready for the varsity level and doesn’t look like a sophomore playing with seniors.

He’s also leaning on a coaching staff he really likes and trusts, one in which has brought some big seasons to Northmen fans.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Pike said on working with the coaches. “Offensive coordinator (Jared Webb) is great, Coach (Brad) Boven at wide receivers is a lot of fun. It’s different, but fun. And we’ve got new coaches on defense this year. We’ve got Coach (Gavin) Wargel on defense this year. He’s done at Northwood, so he’s coming back to coach and that’ll be a lot of fun.”

The Northmen get started with Greenville for a second straight season, opening on the road on Friday, Aug. 29, before another road trip to Bay City Western in Week 2.

By the time the Northmen open at home in Week 3 against Escanaba on Friday, Sept. 12, Pike should be one of the guys that’s emerged for Petoskey.

Where they’ll be as a team remains to be seen with the amount of turnover from a year ago.

“It’s definitely different, but it’s a lot of fun with people not knowing what’s going to happen,” he added.

Some call that pressure. Pike, on the other hand, is excited.
