A Petoskey woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to a crash that left her and a child seriously injured and led to the death of another child.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office announce over Facebook on Tuesday, July 21 that Brooke Adrienne-Lanee Winowiecki, 31, had been charged with five felonies, including second-degree murder, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, reckless driving causing death and reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function.
Winowiecki was arraigned Monday, July 20 at 11:30 a.m. and her bond was set at $100,000
Emmet County Sheriff Matt Leirstein confirmed the murder charge stemmed from the death of an 8-year-old boy who died on June 24.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash on June 21 on East Robinson Road in McKinley Township. Winowiecki and the two children, ages 6 and 8, were in the vehicle when it reportedly went off road and crashed into a tree. The sheriff’s office indicated at the time that impairment was suspected to be a factor.
The sheriff’s office opened an investigation into the crash that resulted in the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office charging Winowiecki.
A probable cause conference in the case is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. July 29, with the preliminary examination set for 2 p.m. Aug. 5. Winowiecki faces up to life in prison if convicted.
