Petoskey State Park campground closed until next spring for upgrades

PETOSKEY — The campground at Petoskey State Park and nearby trails will be closed, starting Wednesday, Sept. 3 until next spring.

The construction work will allow for upgrades to the sewer system and sanitation systems.

Eric Petro, a seasonal employee at the state park, told the Petoskey News-Review there will be more stations for portable water and sewage at the campground. The campground is expected to be closed until spring 2026, although trails may open this winter for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

The beach is expected to stay open through September, with all facilities currently planned to close Oct. 1.

“We’re trying to keep the beach open as long as possible,” Petro said. “We will continue to have that open until any of the contractors tell us they’re concerned about liability and they will close it.”

Petoskey State Park is located at 2475 M-119, and features multiple walking trails, two campgrounds and access to dunes and a sandy beach. The park is situated along the Little Traverse Wheelway, making it a popular stop for cyclists.

As construction continues on, people can visit michigan.gov/recsearch/parks/petoskey for closure updates.
