A Detroit woman died early Wednesday after she was struck by a vehicle while running on a freeway, officials said.
Michigan State Police troopers were called at about 12:20 a.m. to a location on the eastbound Davison Freeway near Oakland Avenue for a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian, authorities said on X.
According to a preliminary investigation, the woman ran onto the freeway and was struck by a passing vehicle. Officials said it’s not clear why the woman ran onto the freeway.
Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene, police said.
Troopers temporarily closed the freeway while they conducted an investigation, but it has since reopened.
The case unfolded the week after a Temperance man, whom police believe died after being struck by a vehicle, was found lying on the side of a Monroe County road.
Also last week, Michigan State Police said they had a person of interest in a Royal Oak Township hit-and-run crash that injured a juvenile pedestrian in custody.
Earlier this month, Ann Arbor police said they identified the driver who struck a pedestrian walking across a street in June and injured him.
There were 2,131 pedestrian-involved crashes in the state and 156 fatalities in those crashes in 2024, according to the latest Michigan State Police traffic crash statistics available. That compares to a total of 2,114 pedestrian-involved crashes and 183 fatalities in the state the year before.
