A Detroit licensed nurse practitioner accused of stealing drugs from her nursing home patient has been charged, officials said.
Maniya Miller was arraigned Friday in the 37th District Court in Center Line, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said.
The 26-year-old is charged with a count of larceny in a building, a count of falsifying medical records, and a count of illegal possession of a controlled substance, according to authorities.
A judge set Miller’s bond at $5,000 and scheduled her next court hearing for Aug. 19, the attorney general’s office said.
If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison for larceny in a building, up to four years for falsifying medical records, and up to four years for illegal possession of a controlled substance.
Court records did not list an attorney for the defendant on Monday.
How investigators traced the crime
Authorities allege Miller stole controlled substances from a Center Line nursing home patient in 2024 and falsified medical records to cover up the theft.
Officials said the nursing home fired Miller after the allegations surfaced and called police and the state’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to report the alleged crime.
“Nurses play such a critical role in caring for our most vulnerable residents,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. “Jeopardizing patient health and safety by stealing medication is unacceptable. My office will investigate and prosecute these offenses to the full extent of the law.”
Other cases
Miller is among the most recent defendants to be accused of falsifying medical records in Michigan.
In May, the administrator of an adult foster care facility in Cadillac was ordered to stand trial on charges stemming from a resident’s 2022 death. She is charged with involuntary manslaughter and obstructing an investigation, but had also been charged initially with two counts of falsifying medical records.
In February, a woman was ordered to stand trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter and entering a false medical record for her alleged involvement in a 2025 explosion of a hyperbaric chamber in Troy that killed a 5-year-old boy.
In January, a federal court judge sentenced a woman convicted of identity theft and falsifying medical records while posing as a registered nurse in Michigan to 75 months in prison.
